Mr. Cook’s ACA Government students at Powhatan High School are bringing civics to life through a unit on local government. On Tuesday night, the class attended the School Board meeting to observe how the board operates, what issues are being discussed, and how citizens can participate. Students are also preparing to attend a Board of Supervisors meeting, compare the two, and then email their representatives with questions that came from their observations. Through these experiences, they’ll see firsthand how local government works and the real impact its decisions have on daily life. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

In Mrs. Dewey’s second grade class at Flat Rock Elementary, vocabulary came to life through a recent storytime. 📖✨ Before reading “Spoon” by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, students learned new words that would appear in the story. As they read, Mrs. Dewey paused to make sure everyone understood the new vocabulary words, and how they fit into the context of the book. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

Powhatan Middle School recently celebrated its first Yearbook Commitment Ceremony! 📸✍️ After seven years as a club, yearbook is now an official class led by Ms. Johnson. School and central office administrators joined students for the event, highlighting what a milestone this is for the award-winning program. Students received fun goodie bags and pledged their dedication to creating a book that truly captures their school year, because, as Ms. Johnson reminded them, a yearbook is a love letter to your school. 🧡 #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan
September is Attendance Awareness Month! 🌟 Every school day matters. Research shows that as early as kindergarten, poor attendance is linked to lower achievement in reading and math. In fact, one missed day can equal 2.5 days lost in math and 1.5 days lost in reading. Let’s keep encouraging our students to show up, build strong habits, and succeed! #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

Back-to-school means back to Chromebooks! 💻 Our IT team worked hard in the first weeks of school to assign thousands of devices across the division. A big thank-you also goes to the many school staff members who supported the process. The collaboration across schools and departments was outstanding. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

Powhatan High School JROTC cadets had a busy weekend serving the community with pride and precision. On Wednesday, Ms. Thompson’s 4th graders at Flat Rock Elementary dove into a hands-on science lesson about water and pollution. 💧 Using a model to represent the Chesapeake Bay, students took part in an interactive story showing how, as populations grow and resource use changes, pollution builds up in our waterways. The activity was a vivid reminder that we’re all part of the problem – and the solution. Students wrapped up by discussing ways we can each conserve resources and reduce pollution, trash, and water waste every day. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan
September is Attendance Awareness Month! 🌟 When students attend regularly, they set themselves up for success – not just today, but for the future. Research shows that students with strong attendance outperform their peers in math, science, and reading. Let’s keep working together to help our students attend today and achieve tomorrow. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

At Powhatan Elementary, the third graders enjoyed a special way to mark the THIRD day of school on Aug. 20 by celebrating the power of THREE! 🎉 Students shared their top three favorites, from colors to animals to books, and swapped lists with classmates. Last week, Mrs. Florence and Mr. Bailey's Algebra 1 class completed an activity on measuring height and handspan to apply scatterplots and lines of best fit in a real-world scenario. The activity was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man drawing in 1490. Roman architect Vitruvius’s writings on architecture and human anatomy included an observation that a person’s handspan is approximately 1/10 of their height. 🖐📏 #WeArePCPS #TeamPowhatan
Last week in Mrs. Yoder’s fifth grade class at Pocahontas Elementary, students wasted no time getting creative with their first writing prompt of the school year. ✍️ They were challenged to tell a story about a special time or day they’ll always remember using brainstorming and four-square planning to bring their ideas to life. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan
Powhatan Middle School 8th graders kicked off the year with a book tasting in English class, complete with snacks to set the mood! 📚🍪 In classrooms led by Ms. Beberdick, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Sopp, and Mrs. Bartholomew, students sampled a variety of genres, from fantasy to nonfiction, to see what sparked their interest. This fun start not only introduced them to new titles and authors, but also set the stage for their first library trip of the year. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan
Rather than starting the school year with icebreakers or orientation activities, Mrs. Barnes’ AP Physics students at Powhatan High School dove straight into science on Aug. 19. Their first challenge? An experiment that explored how toy cars move at a constant velocity. Students collected data, graphed their results, and calculated slopes. Talk about starting the year with forward momentum! #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

Reminder: Powhatan County Public Schools will be closed Friday, Aug. 29 and Monday, Sept. 1 for Labor Day weekend. Enjoy the long weekend, Powhatan families!
