🔢✨ Perfect Square Day is here, and Mrs. Arnett’s math students at Powhatan Middle School got on board with the occasion. Today is a Perfect Square Day – 9/16/25 - a date made entirely of perfect squares! Even the full year 2025 is a perfect square (45²). On Monday, Mrs. Arnett’s students explored the concept of perfect squares, discovering what makes this date so special, and even figuring out all 15 Perfect Square Days in 2025.
Fun fact: There is one more Perfect Square Day in 2025 – 9/25/25. After that, it won’t happen again until January 1, 2036!

It felt natural for Mrs. DeHart to take her AP environmental science students at Powhatan High School outside earlier this month for a change of scenery. The students were prepping a study guide for their first quiz of the semester on ecosystems and biomes. #WeArePCPS #TeamPowhatan

Mrs. Hockaday’s third graders visited Ms. Adcock’s STEM Lab at Flat Rock Elementary for a hands-on science lesson called the Lemonade Investigation. 🍋 Students explored how different conditions, such as the temperature of water, impact how quickly lemonade mix dissolves. As part of the PAT assessment, which monitors student growth and knowledge in science, they practiced experimental procedures, investigations, and even tied in math skills through graphing. #WeArePCPS #TeamPowhatan

Elementary students across PCPS took time to honor Patriot Day on Thursday. Classes took turns throughout the day visiting their flagpoles and talking about the meaning of the day. Shown here, at Flat Rock Elementary, Mr. Beberdick’s fifth graders gathered at the flagpole, while at Powhatan Elementary, Ms. Daniel’s first graders did the same. These moments of reflection helped students learn about the meaning of September 11 and why we pause to remember. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

Mr. Cook’s ACA Government students at Powhatan High School are bringing civics to life through a unit on local government. On Tuesday night, the class attended the School Board meeting to observe how the board operates, what issues are being discussed, and how citizens can participate. Students are also preparing to attend a Board of Supervisors meeting, compare the two, and then email their representatives with questions that came from their observations. Through these experiences, they’ll see firsthand how local government works and the real impact its decisions have on daily life. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

In Mrs. Dewey’s second grade class at Flat Rock Elementary, vocabulary came to life through a recent storytime. 📖✨ Before reading “Spoon” by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, students learned new words that would appear in the story. As they read, Mrs. Dewey paused to make sure everyone understood the new vocabulary words, and how they fit into the context of the book. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

Powhatan Middle School recently celebrated its first Yearbook Commitment Ceremony! 📸✍️ After seven years as a club, yearbook is now an official class led by Ms. Johnson. School and central office administrators joined students for the event, highlighting what a milestone this is for the award-winning program. Students received fun goodie bags and pledged their dedication to creating a book that truly captures their school year, because, as Ms. Johnson reminded them, a yearbook is a love letter to your school. 🧡 #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

September is Attendance Awareness Month! 🌟 Every school day matters. Research shows that as early as kindergarten, poor attendance is linked to lower achievement in reading and math. In fact, one missed day can equal 2.5 days lost in math and 1.5 days lost in reading. Let’s keep encouraging our students to show up, build strong habits, and succeed! #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

On Wednesday, Ms. Thompson’s 4th graders at Flat Rock Elementary dove into a hands-on science lesson about water and pollution. 💧 Using a model to represent the Chesapeake Bay, students took part in an interactive story showing how, as populations grow and resource use changes, pollution builds up in our waterways. The activity was a vivid reminder that we’re all part of the problem – and the solution. Students wrapped up by discussing ways we can each conserve resources and reduce pollution, trash, and water waste every day. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan
