On the evening of Monday, Dec. 4, PCPS will be conducting a community-wide test of our new notification system. Our new website vendor, Apptegy, provides a messaging platform that will enable us to more effectively reach parents with time-sensitive information. Not only will we be able to reach you by phone, text, and email as we do currently, but we'll also be able to simultaneously broadcast to all our social media platforms, including our new Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as directly to your phone if you have downloaded the PCPS website app.

Before the Thanksgiving break, Mrs. Cable’s kindergartners at Powhatan Elementary read “How to Hide a Turkey” and completed activities around it, did an activity about thankfulness, and made thankfulness placemats they could take home. Susan Shepperson, president of Alliance of Wild Animal Rehabilitation and Education (AWARE), recently brought in a barred owl and talked with Pocahontas Elementary kindergarten students about nocturnal animals and their features and adaptations. May the odds be ever in your favor! Mr. Barnes’ Probability and Statistics and AP Statistics classes at Powhatan High School were invited to Mr. Beasley’s Engineering Explorations 1 class to collaborate on an activity involving unfair carnival games. The engineering students designed and built unfair carnival games, and Mr. Barnes’ students were tasked with calculating the probabilities of win percentages. In a future unit, the students will revisit the data to run hypothesis tests comparing the calculated probabilities to the claimed win percentages. #wearepcps #teampowhatan #elevateeducatorsva

Powhatan High School students and staff were encouraged to wear yellow on Nov. 15 for Remembrance Day. The School Counseling Department selected this day to remember any loved ones who have passed away. The holiday season can be an especially difficult time. In addition to wearing yellow – PHS counselors also invited students and staff to fill out a remembrance card during lunch. These notes were strung up and draped across the school’s LOVE sign to remember and honor loved ones who are no longer with us. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

An estimated six million skeletons are housed in underground tunnels in the Catacombs of Paris. The site of endless skulls stacked on top of each other lining the walks is a striking one and one recently waiting for Mrs. Arnold’s French classes and Mr. Baker’s World Cultures class at Powhatan Middle School. Over several days, the students studied the Catacombs and the Père Lachaise Cemetery as part of a cultural exploration of All Saints’ Day. After studying the Catacombs and their history and purpose, the students got to explore a recreation in Mrs. Arnold’s classroom and learn about five famous French historical figures. #wearepcps #teampowhatan #elevateeducatorsva

In 2021, 35 employees became members of our first cohort for LETRS Training. The Lexia LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) is a comprehensive professional learning opportunity designed to provide early childhood and elementary educators and administrators with deep knowledge to be literacy and language experts in the science of reading. This is an intensive training in which teachers had to complete extensive readings and online modules while also attending eight virtual trainings ranging from half days to whole days. Individuals who completed the 132 hours of training: Stephanie Adam, Katie Bates, Paula Bean, Melinda Brooks, Carla Crump, Jill Dewey, Julie Garner, Tiffany Green, Robyn Hall, Amy Hintz, Angela Innerbichler, Bailey Johnson, Gwynn Johnson, Jenny Johnson, Lisa McCue, Sarah Moore, Samantha Morton, Riley Mosher, Molly Moss, Traciann Paden, Tiffany Proffitt, Melissa Rama, Lisa Richter, Colleen Schwartz, Amy Senger, Laura Simon, Kate Southward, Julia Stech, Tia Stout, Mark Thompson, and Ellen Valcourt.
