May 2026- PCPS Parent Resource Center News Edition #4

Our character focus for May is perseverance. Students will be recognized for continuing to try, putting forth effort, and not giving up when learning feels challenging. As we head into the end of the school year, consistent encouragement and recognition of effort will help students finish strong.

Student-Friendly Definition: Keep trying and doing your best, even when something is hard.

Field Day at FRES 5/27!

IF this day is to be rescheduled to Thursday, May 28th we will announce it by Tuesday. Those who signed up to help Wednesday, if you are available to help IF it gets rescheduled to the next day that would be a huge help! The FRES Wellness Committee is dedicated to encouraging healthy habits for all students, staff, and their families. We focus on sharing practical tips, resources, and activities that support overall wellness throughout the school year.

If you missed purchasing a yearbook, the next chance will be May 27th from 9-12:30pm, OR until we run out, whichever comes first. We will be selling them right as you walk into the building.
The ballot for voting on next year’s PTO Board, as well as the proposed bylaw amendments, will be emailed to all PTO members by Monday morning, May 18th.
In order to vote, you must be a current PTO member. If you have not yet paid your 2025–2026 membership dues and would like to participate in the vote, you may do so using the following link: https://flat-rock-elementary-pto.square.site/
Once your membership payment has been received, the ballot will be sent to you via email. If you do not receive the voting email, that means your PTO membership dues have not yet been paid for the 2025–2026 school year. Thank you for your continued support of our PTO!

Announcements and Additional Information

For the safety of our students and staff during the morning drop off process, please review and follow the following procedures:
- Please do not park in the School Resource Officers' parking spot directly in front of the school.
- Please do not drop students off in the parking lot. Students should only exit vehicles from the drop off line directly in front of the school. However, you are welcome to park and walk your child to the front door if you prefer.
- Please heed the STOP/SLOW sign at all times.
Our neighbor across Batterson asks that if you are approaching Flat Rock coming eastbound, please do not use her driveway to turn around.
Helping Hands Award: Do you know a Powhatan County Public Schools employee who is Inspiring, Empowering, or Innovating? We want to hear from you. Tell us about any staff member who is making a difference in the lives of our children by inspiring, empowering or innovating. CLICK HERE to nominate someone! We welcome suggestions from students, families, co-workers or community members.
Parent Drop-off/Pick-up:
- Please do not exit your car in the line-if your child needs help to buckle once they’re in the car, please pull around and park to buckle them
- Do not pass cars in the line
- Children only exit directly in front of the building

For any transportation changes, please email FRES Parent Pick Up and your child’s teacher. Please be patient as arrival and dismissal takes a little longer the first few days.
OPT IN to receive TEXT messages - If you do not currently receive text messages from the school messenger program and you would like to OPT IN to receive TEXT messages. Text the words OPT IN to 67587.

Volunteer With Us!

The Lunch Buddies Mentoring Program has been in place in Powhatan County Public Schools for over 10 years. The goal of the program is to help foster strong relationships among our students and the positive adult role models in the community. Whether at any of our 3 elementary schools or our middle school, you would meet with a student once a week and ultimately act as another advocate for them. It can be anything from academic support to conversation, playing games, making crafts, and so much more. The program is planned to begin the first week of October and will last until mid-May, when SOL testing begins in our upper grade levels.
