Our character focus for May is perseverance. Students will be recognized for continuing to try, putting forth effort, and not giving up when learning feels challenging. As we head into the end of the school year, consistent encouragement and recognition of effort will help students finish strong.

Middle School Instrument Tryouts!

• 5th Grade Families…is your 5th grader planning to join band or orchestra?

  Come out to one of our Instrument Tryout Nights!

  • Dates: May 18

  • Time: 5:00–7:00 PM

  • Location: Enter through the bus loop doors

Students will have the chance to try out different instruments they may want to play in class. Parents can also meet with representatives from Powhatan Music & Sound and Music & Arts to learn more about the instrument rental process.

We heard you.... if you missed the ordering deadline for the yearbooks, we will have the option to order one before Field Day **If you come and attend the PTO General Board Meeting on May 7th at 6pm- you can pay and reserve your yearbook then! If you cannot make it during that time, we will still have some yearbooks available for sale as a first come first serve on Field Day!

Announcements and Additional Information

• For the safety of our students and staff during the morning drop off process, please review and follow the following procedures:

  • Please do not park in the School Resource Officers' parking spot directly in front of the school.

  • Please do not drop students off in the parking lot. Students should only exit vehicles from the drop off line directly in front of the school. However, you are welcome to park and walk your child to the front door if you prefer. 

  • Please heed the STOP/SLOW sign at all times.

• Our neighbor across Batterson asks that if  you are approaching Flat Rock coming eastbound, please do not use her driveway to turn around. 

• Helping Hands Award: Do you know a Powhatan County Public Schools employee who is Inspiring, Empowering, or Innovating? We want to hear from you. Tell us about any staff member who is making a difference in the lives of our children by inspiring, empowering or innovating. CLICK HERE to nominate someone! We welcome suggestions from students, families, co-workers or community members.

• Parent Drop-off/Pick-up:

  • Please do not exit your car in the line-if your child needs help to buckle once they’re in the car, please pull around and park to buckle them

  • Do not pass cars in the line

  • Children only exit directly in front of the building

• This Parent Guide has additional information about the school year, including the parent/student handbook, important school contact information, meal prices, and more detailed information about parent drop off and pick up.

• For any transportation changes, please email FRES Parent Pick Up and your child’s teacher. Please be patient as arrival and dismissal takes a little longer the first few days. 

• OPT IN to receive TEXT messages - If you do not currently receive text messages from the school messenger program and you would like to OPT IN to receive TEXT messages. Text the words OPT IN to 67587.

Volunteer With Us!

• The Lunch Buddies Mentoring Program has been in place in Powhatan County Public Schools for over 10 years. The goal of the program is to help foster strong relationships among our students and the positive adult role models in the community. Whether at any of our 3 elementary schools or our middle school, you would meet with a student once a week and ultimately act as another advocate for them. It can be anything from academic support to conversation, playing games, making crafts, and so much more. The program is planned to begin the first week of October and will last until mid-May, when SOL testing begins in our upper grade levels. 

  • If you are interested in participating as a mentor for the Lunch Buddies Program, we would be happy to have you! Please reach out to lunchbuddies@powhatan.k12.va.us for any questions.   If you are interested in applying, please visit this page to apply.
