In May, we shared the WTVR CBS 6 News story about the meaningful Memorial Day program led by Mrs. Easter’s and Miss Stinnett’s fourth grade classes at Powhatan Elementary. ❤️🤍💙 We also wanted to share some of our own photos from that special event. Powhatan High School celebrated Career and Workforce Development Signing Day last week to recognize students as they took the next step toward their futures. Fifteen students signed letters of intent across a variety of fields, including electricity, building trades, agriculture mechanics and fabrication, cosmetology, and JROTC. Some students committed directly to employers, while others signed with universities as part of their continued education and service plans. The event highlighted the meaningful connections students have built with employers and postsecondary opportunities as they prepare for life after graduation. PHS was also excited to welcome alumnus Nathan Poe, Class of 2019, as this year’s guest speaker. Congratulations to all of the students recognized during this special event.

Art, ideas, and a lot of creativity – our AP Art students are ready to share the work they’ve been creating. Fifteen Powhatan High School artists will each showcase a series of pieces built around their own personal themes. The public is invited to stop by, check out their work, and see the different directions their creativity has taken them. The AP Art Exhibition will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 at Powhatan War Memorial Cultural Arts & Community Center, 2375 Skaggs Road. Refreshments will be available, and Artist Awards will be announced at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

During two school assemblies held in March, students listened as African storyteller Ada Ari read stories and performed. Her visit, connected to Black History Month and Women’s History Month, gave students an interactive experience filled with dancing, storytelling, and hands-on exploration of cultural artifacts. Ms. Ari has written children’s books inspired by folk tales from countries across Africa, along with African language board books representing more than 40 languages and activity books that extend the learning. She also gives back, donating a portion of proceeds to orphanages across the continent.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 PCPS STEM and Powhatan High School’s Planeteers Club joined the Powhatan County Earth Day Celebration held Friday in the Village, and students and staff had a wonderful time. The two groups hosted booths filled with hands-on “make and take” activities, helping visitors of all ages learn more about caring for our planet in creative ways. We appreciate the opportunity to celebrate Earth Day and connect with our community! 🧡🖤
