Building Maintenance Updates

In accordance with EPA regulations, Powhatan County Public Schools has an Asbestos Management Plan in place. A copy of the plan is available for your review in the office of each school building. Asbestos information will be made available annually for Powhatan Middle School. Information about asbestos inspections, response actions, and post-response action activities, including periodic re-inspection and surveillance activities that are planned or in progress, will be posted on the website and available in the main office. If there are any questions, you may contact Mr. Tom Sulzer, Director of Facilities, at 804-598-5700.

Due to the forecast and the potential for inclement weather, we have made the decision to move the Powhatan High School graduation ceremony indoors to our main gymnasium. While we had hoped to celebrate outdoors, this decision allows us to ensure a safe and organized event for our graduates and guests.
Graduation will still take place on Thursday, May 21st at 7:00 PM. Doors will open at 6:00PM
As a reminder, due to space constraints, each graduate will be allotted tickets as follows:
- 5 gymnasium tickets
- 2 auditorium tickets
Guests seated in the auditorium will have access to a live stream of the 2026 Graduation Ceremony. We will also have a link for anyone who wishes to view the live stream video.
Additionally, we have attached information regarding parking for the ceremony.
We appreciate your understanding, flexibility, and continued support as we celebrate the Class of 2026 and this important milestone.

The Virginia School Boards Association is holding its sixth annual Student Essay Contest. The first-place winner will present before an audience of more than 200 school board members and administrators at the 2026 VSBA Conference on Education held at the Wyndham Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel in Virginia Beach on July 16, 2026.
We hope that this contest will bring out the very best in students’ writing and speaking efforts and allow our attendees to witness examples of bright, thoughtful, and accomplished students from around the state. This year’s topic is: Rooted in Public Education.
The first-place winner will receive a $1,000 award. Submissions are open to all Virginia public high school students (grades 9-12), in school divisions that are members of the VSBA. This contest is a great opportunity for students to share their unique voices as well as compete for funds to further their education. This year’s contest is sponsored by Haney Phinyowattanachip, PLLC.

Students are able to use our "Silence Hurts" form to report behavior of any kind. This form goes directly to all administrators and counselors, and students can use this form anonymously. Students are encouraged to use this form to help a friend in need or report a situation. The form is located on our PCPS websites. We encourage our students to be an upstander and help a friend in need - "if you see something, say something!"

The Lunch Buddies Mentoring Program has been in place in Powhatan County Public Schools for over 10 years. The goal of the program is to help foster strong relationships among our students and the positive adult role models in the community. Whether at any of our 3 elementary schools or our middle school, you would meet with a student once a week and ultimately act as another advocate for them. It can be anything from academic support to conversation, playing games, making crafts, and so much more. The program is planned to begin the first week of October and will last until mid-May, when SOL testing begins in our upper grade levels.
