First graders at Pocahontas Elementary have been exploring the sounds letters can make – recently focusing on the soft C. In Ms. Madden’s class, students completed a phonics sort, cutting out pictures and matching them with the correct soft C words. Meanwhile, in Mrs. McCue’s class, students practiced the same concept through literacy stations, working in centers to read and spell words with a soft C. 🧡🖤

Fourth graders in Mrs. Humphrey’s class at Powhatan Elementary had an exciting day meeting some very special new classmates. 🐣 As part of the division wide 4-H Embryology Project, fourth graders at all three elementary schools have been studying life cycles by incubating eggs. Throughout the 21-day process, they observed the eggs and used candling to look inside and see how the chicks were developing. The chicks began hatching last night and this morning, so today students got to see them on their very first day after hatching. The class will keep the chicks for about a week as they continue learning about embryology and life cycles.
A big thank you to 4-H Extension Agent Cathy Howland with Virginia Cooperative Extension – Powhatan for providing instruction to all fourth graders as well as delivering fertilized eggs from local farmers. Also, thank you to Tractor Supply in Powhatan for donating the bedding and starter feed for all of the classes. 🧡🖤

At Flat Rock Elementary, our ECSE preschoolers in Miss Penny’s class recently put their detective skills to the test. 🔍 When a favorite classroom toy went missing, students grabbed magnifying glasses and searched high and low around the school for clues. After a thorough investigation, they discovered the toy had been in their classroom all along! Great teamwork from our youngest learners. 🧡🖤

emilee.meinhard@powhatan.k12.va.us.
All sales benefit the PHS FFA and Horticulture programs. Horticulture Science and Greenhouse Production Management students do a fantastic job growing the plants for the sale, as you can see in these photos.

Eighth graders in Mr. Raychouni’s Intro to Game Design & Robotics classes at Powhatan Middle School were recently joined by AP Computer Science students from Powhatan High School, who stepped into the role of “student teachers.” 💻 Over two days, Mr. Wilson brought his high schoolers to offer lessons exploring game development while serving as coding coaches . The initiative, supported in partnership with Mr. Acevedo, gave younger students a glimpse into future coursework and career pathways they can take when they reach high school. 🧡🖤

In Mrs. Vallent’s AP Biology class at Powhatan High School, students are getting hands-on with biotechnology by using the same types of techniques found in research labs, law enforcement, and industry.
They conducted a gel electrophoresis lab where they made agarose gels and submerged them in a conductive buffer solution that is hooked up to a power source, resulting in the proteins separating by their size and charge.
They also conducted a bacterial transformation lab, introducing a small piece of DNA (a plasmid) into E. coli bacteria. This plasmid included instructions to produce a glowing protein originally found in jellyfish, resulting in visible, glowing bacteria in their lab samples. Impressively, every student successfully saw their transformation results! 🧡🖤

Good morning PCPS Community. The Powhatan County School Board Recap is usually intended to give highlights from School Board meetings, but much of what is discussed during budget season at the Board of Supervisors meetings directly relates to the schools. In those instances, special issues of or additions to the newsletter will give highlights of school-related matters to help people unable to attend or watch full board meetings. The latest newsletter covers the school-related discussion from the March 12 budget workshop.
The newsletter link is in the comments.

Mrs. Wallers third graders at Flat Rock Elementary recently explored art and culture through a creative project in Mrs. Kunka’s class. 🎨 Inspired by the Dogon tribe of Mali, students watched a video of ceremonial dancing before designing their own masks. Along the way, they practiced creating symmetry while using both organic and geometric shapes. Each student was encouraged to keep their designs bold and simple, reflecting key features of traditional Dogon masks. 🧡🖤

Mrs. Trott, Coach Winton, and Coach Hart's 8th grade Civics and Economics classes at Powhatan Middle School got the opportunity earlier this semester to hear from Delegate Lee Ware and receive an introduction to the legislative branch of state government. They were given the chance to learn more details about what they have studied in class and ask questions about legislation and Del. Ware’s role in the General Assembly.

All Powhatan County Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay today, March 17th, due to road closures following last night’s storms. While all schools have power, the delay will allow for improved visibility for safer navigation for our drivers.
We understand this may cause inconvenience for families, and we appreciate your understanding as we prioritize the safety of our school community.

Fifth graders at Flat Rock Elementary participated earlier this semester in a STEM Day focused on helping students understand thermal energy, insulators, and conductors. Throughout the day, students investigated heat transfer by exploring how different materials either conduct heat transfer or insulate against it. They worked to solve a real-world problem caused by climate change: penguins in southern Africa are on the decline because seagulls take their eggs when they go to the water to cool off. The students were challenged to build models of small houses to protect the eggs from seagulls and the penguins from the heat. They then tested the houses in hot boxes with penguin shaped ice cubes inside.

Eighth graders in Mr. Stocker’s World History I classes at Powhatan Middle School recently partnered with Dr. Spott in the Innovation Lab for a hands-on history project. Students researched the dimensions and function or purpose of a monument constructed before the year 1500 A.D. and then calculated and built a model on a 1:200 scale. Projects included landmarks from around the world, such as the Great Wall of China, the Colosseum, the Parthenon, Machu Picchu, Sensoji Temple in Japan, and the Roman Baths. Since each model was built with the same scale, they were able to compare monuments that were built around the world during different times and with different materials. 🧡🖤

Powhatan County Public Schools will be closed on Monday, March 16th due to the forecast of severe thunderstorms, including a moderate risk of high winds and enhanced risk tornadoes. Because the timing of the storm system is from late morning into the evening, coinciding with afternoon dismissal and student transportation, the decision has been made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of our students and staff. All evening activities are canceled.
We understand this may cause inconvenience for families, and we appreciate your understanding as we prioritize the safety of our school community.
