Dear PCPS Families,

We want to make you aware of an important change to Virginia's Reading and Mathematics SOL tests beginning in the 2026-2027 school year.

Virginia is gradually raising the score students need to reach the Proficient level. These changes will be phased in over the next four years.

What does this mean for your child?

You may notice a different performance level on your child's SOL report this year. This does not necessarily mean your child performed worse. The state has changed the scores used to determine each performance level.

During this transition, Virginia has added a new performance level called Pass/Approaching. Students at this level are approaching the new Proficient standard and are still considered passing for school accountability and applicable high school graduation requirements.

Most importantly, don't be alarmed by a change in your child's performance level. At PCPS, we will continue to provide strong instruction, monitor student progress, and support students as they work toward these higher expectations.

SOL results are just one piece of the picture. We also consider classroom performance, teacher feedback, and other assessments when looking at your child's progress.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we support our students through this transition!
