We are excited to announce our next Transition Tuesday event, taking place Tuesday, April 21, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. This session will be held virtually, making it easy for everyone to join.
Topic: What Comes Next?
Life after high school is quickly approaching—whether that transition is happening this year, next year, or further down the road. Planning for the future can never start too early, and this month’s workshop is designed to help students and families begin thinking about the many possibilities ahead.
We are pleased to welcome two guest speakers who will share their expertise, experiences, and practical guidance on navigating postsecondary options.
Featured Speaker: Jan Shea, MSW
Jan Shea joined Virginia Commonwealth University’s Center on Transition Innovations (CTI) in 2014, bringing extensive experience in juvenile justice and mental health. She currently serves as the program coordinator for the accredited ACE-IT in College program, where she supports young adults with intellectual disabilities in pursuing inclusive higher education at VCU.
Over the past decade, Jan has contributed to numerous CTI initiatives, including providing mental health support to transfer students and coordinating employment opportunities for women with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and spinal cord injuries (SCI). Outside of her professional work, Jan enjoys paddleboarding around Greater Richmond, spending time with her family, and pursuing her doctorate in Educational Leadership.
Jan’s Session Focus:
Jan will discuss pathways after high school, including 2- and 4-year colleges, technical schools, and workforce programs. She will provide guidance on navigating these systems, explain college accommodations, and highlight recent legislative updates related to documentation. Attendees will also learn about valuable resources and inclusive postsecondary options such as Longwood LIFE and ACE-IT in College.
Featured Speaker: Aidan Brown
Aidan Brown is a graduating senior at Longwood University, studying Special Education (K–12) and Theatre. He brings over two and a half years of experience in higher education disability services and has worked as a job coach for a postsecondary program supporting adults with intellectual disabilities.
Aidan is passionate about accessibility, transition support, and helping students build independence and meaningful community connections. As an autistic student, he offers both professional insight and lived experience in conversations around inclusive education and disability advocacy.
Aidan’s Session Focus:
Aidan will explore what it means to live, learn, and lead with a disability. Drawing from his personal experiences with autism and anxiety, along with his work in accessibility across various institutions, he will share real-world perspectives on creating inclusive, supportive environments for all.
