Earlier this semester, the Powhatan High School JROTC program gathered at Independence Golf Club for its annual Military Ball. The event celebrated the dedication and accomplishments of the cadets, including recognition of the senior class. The evening blended tradition and fun, featuring music, dancing, meaningful ceremonies, and a time of remembrance for those who are no longer with us. It was a memorable night honoring service, leadership, and the bonds formed through the JROTC program. 🧡🖤

In May, we shared the WTVR CBS 6 News story about the meaningful Memorial Day program led by Mrs. Easter’s and Miss Stinnett’s fourth grade classes at Powhatan Elementary. ❤️🤍💙 We also wanted to share some of our own photos from that special event. Students did a thoughtful and respectful job honoring the meaning of Memorial Day and remembering those who served our country. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved. 🧡🖤

What a great start to summer reading! 📚☀️
Families joined Powhatan County Public Library for the Summer Reading Kickoff, where children registered for the Summer Reading Program, picked up books and necklaces, and enjoyed an entertaining performance by Jonathan the Juggler.
Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate reading and help kick off a summer full of books, learning, and fun. 🧡🖤

Five graduating seniors pose for a futures-themed photo showing their plans after graduation.

The following message was emailed to families of PHS parents, but we want to make sure all of our seniors and their families see it:
Dear PHS Families and Graduates,
Due to the forecast and the potential for inclement weather, we have made the decision to move the Powhatan High School graduation ceremony indoors to our main gymnasium. While we had hoped to celebrate outdoors, this decision allows us to ensure a safe and organized event for our graduates and guests.
Graduation will still take place on Thursday, May 21st at 7:00 PM. Doors will open at 6:00PM
As a reminder, due to space constraints, each graduate will be allotted tickets as follows:
* 5 gymnasium tickets
* 2 auditorium tickets
Guests seated in the auditorium will have access to a live stream of the 2026 Graduation Ceremony. We will also have a link for anyone who wishes to view the live stream video.
Additionally, we have attached information regarding parking for the ceremony.
We appreciate your understanding, flexibility, and continued support as we celebrate the Class of 2026 and this important milestone.
Sincerely,
PHS Administration

Even as the end of the school year quickly approaches, we know we have some great moments from earlier this semester that we haven’t shared yet, including this creative project from Powhatan High School. Students in Mrs. McManus’ adaptive art class drew inspiration from Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night as they created their own mixed media villages featuring some of their favorite places. The project gave students the opportunity to explore creativity while experimenting with different artistic techniques and materials.

We want to once again congratulate Paula Duncan on being recognized as a Virginia Teacher of the Year finalist. Representing Powhatan County Public Schools at the state level is an incredible accomplishment, and we are so proud of the impact she continues to make on students and education. We love seeing moments like this as Mrs. Duncan connected with state leaders and fellow educators during the recognition events. She had the opportunity to meet Governor Abigail Spanberger, First Gentleman Adam Spanberger, Secretary of Education Jeffery Smith, and Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons during the recognition event celebrating educators from across the Commonwealth. Thank you, Mrs. Duncan, for the dedication, care, and leadership you bring to your students and school community each day.

Powhatan High School celebrated Career and Workforce Development Signing Day last week to recognize students as they took the next step toward their futures. Fifteen students signed letters of intent across a variety of fields, including electricity, building trades, agriculture mechanics and fabrication, cosmetology, and JROTC. Some students committed directly to employers, while others signed with universities as part of their continued education and service plans. The event highlighted the meaningful connections students have built with employers and postsecondary opportunities as they prepare for life after graduation. PHS was also excited to welcome alumnus Nathan Poe, Class of 2019, as this year’s guest speaker. Congratulations to all of the students recognized during this special event.

We are continuing our Teacher Appreciation Week highlights with photos of our wonderful teachers and staff at Powhatan High School. In April, our Human Resources team hosted a staff appreciation lunch at the high school, serving team members during the different lunches. While not everyone is pictured, we want to make sure the entire PHS staff knows they are appreciated. We’re grateful for the role they play in teaching, encouraging, and supporting students each day. Feel free to share some words of encouragement for them. See more photos on the division's Facebook page.

Powhatan High School’s Culinary program includes a critical component called Bailey’s Café. Usually offered twice a week in late spring, every culinary class plays a role in making it happen, whether preparing food in advance or helping run the café when it is open. Pictured here, you can see Culinary 1 students cooking for and serving staff members their delicious lunches earlier this semester. Led by Mr. Robertson, the café offers students the chance to build skills in food preparation, teamwork, and customer service. Through experiences like Bailey’s Café, students can apply their learning in a real-world setting while developing skills they can carry with them beyond the classroom.
