Elementary students across PCPS took time to honor Patriot Day on Thursday. Classes took turns throughout the day visiting their flagpoles and talking about the meaning of the day. Shown here, at Flat Rock Elementary, Mr. Beberdick’s fifth graders gathered at the flagpole, while at Powhatan Elementary, Ms. Daniel’s first graders did the same. These moments of reflection helped students learn about the meaning of September 11 and why we pause to remember. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

Mr. Cook’s ACA Government students at Powhatan High School are bringing civics to life through a unit on local government. On Tuesday night, the class attended the School Board meeting to observe how the board operates, what issues are being discussed, and how citizens can participate. Students are also preparing to attend a Board of Supervisors meeting, compare the two, and then email their representatives with questions that came from their observations. Through these experiences, they’ll see firsthand how local government works and the real impact its decisions have on daily life. #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

September is Attendance Awareness Month! 🌟 Every school day matters. Research shows that as early as kindergarten, poor attendance is linked to lower achievement in reading and math. In fact, one missed day can equal 2.5 days lost in math and 1.5 days lost in reading. Let’s keep encouraging our students to show up, build strong habits, and succeed! #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan

Last week, Mrs. Florence and Mr. Bailey's Algebra 1 class completed an activity on measuring height and handspan to apply scatterplots and lines of best fit in a real-world scenario. The activity was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man drawing in 1490. Roman architect Vitruvius’s writings on architecture and human anatomy included an observation that a person’s handspan is approximately 1/10 of their height. 🖐📏 #WeArePCPS #TeamPowhatan

Rather than starting the school year with icebreakers or orientation activities, Mrs. Barnes’ AP Physics students at Powhatan High School dove straight into science on Aug. 19. Their first challenge? An experiment that explored how toy cars move at a constant velocity. Students collected data, graphed their results, and calculated slopes. Talk about starting the year with forward momentum! #WeArePCPS #teampowhatan
