Summer meal program provides relief for families
POWHATAN, VA – As grocery costs continue to strain household budgets, Powhatan County Public Schools is helping families ensure children have access to healthy meals throughout the summer.
Through August 18, the school division is offering weekly breakfast and lunch meal pickups for PCPS students every Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Powhatan Middle School, Door #11.
Families can still register for the program.
For many families, the service helps fill the gap left when school cafeterias close for the summer.
One Powhatan parent caring for multiple children said she immediately recognized the value of the program after learning about it through one of her children's schools.
"I was thinking, 'Oh, that will help so much,'" she said. "Groceries are super expensive."
The mom shared that replacing school breakfasts and lunches during the summer months creates a significant financial burden for many families.
She picks up meals for five PCPS students, including her own children and others staying with her family, and said the impact was immediate.
"The kids are going to be fed and have plenty of stuff to snack on. And it is healthier food, not junk food," she said. "The option to have so much milk is amazing. We go through probably 20 gallons of milk a month.”
She described the registration process as quick and straightforward.
"The form was extremely easy and very short," she said. "Then, going in to receive the food, everybody was so friendly and helpful. They even used a cart to help me bring everything to my car because it was so much food. It was amazing."
Families receive a variety of nutritious items, including fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, juice, cereal, muffins, and lunch entrees.
"We are hoping to relieve the stress of providing healthy breakfasts and lunches for Powhatan families," said Dorothy Kohler, Food Services General Manager. "We know how beneficial it is to have these meals available to all PCPS families this summer."
Students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals may receive meals at no cost. Students who do not qualify for free or reduced-price meals may purchase breakfast for $1.75 and lunch for $3.60.
Payment for purchased meals must be available in the student's lunch account by the day prior to pickup.
Families who are unable to pick up meals should contact Joann English at 804-362-2500 ext. 142 or joann.english@powhatan.k12.va.us.
To sign up, families can complete the Summer Meals Form found on the PCPS website (the link is in the comments) or submit a paper form to the main office at the Pocahontas Landmark Center.

In May, we shared the WTVR CBS 6 News story about the meaningful Memorial Day program led by Mrs. Easter’s and Miss Stinnett’s fourth grade classes at Powhatan Elementary. ❤️🤍💙 We also wanted to share some of our own photos from that special event. Students did a thoughtful and respectful job honoring the meaning of Memorial Day and remembering those who served our country. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved. 🧡🖤

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Hintz’s class at Powhatan Elementary focused on building early math and money skills last week as they learned to identify coins and understand their value. Through hands-on activities and practice, students worked on recognizing different coins and connecting them to their worth as they built real-world learning skills.

Powhatan Elementary School wrapped up the Kids Heart Challenge at the end of April with a rescheduled special awards ceremony. During American Heart Month in February, the school highlighted the importance of taking care of their hearts by being physically active every day, eating fruits and vegetables, sleeping at least 10 hours at night, and staying away from smoke. They also learned the warning signs of a stroke, practiced how to do hands-only CPR, and completed several cardiovascular activities.
During the awards ceremony, the students from each grade level with the highest fundraising totals got the opportunity to push a pie in the face of brave staff members. In total, 99 students registered for the challenge, raising $16,373.13 for the American Heart Association. In addition, 33 families learned hands-only CPR, and all students K-5 learned hands-only CPR in class. A big thank you to Savanah Beatley, school engagement director for the American Heart Association, for joining the celebration.

We want to once again congratulate Paula Duncan on being recognized as a Virginia Teacher of the Year finalist. Representing Powhatan County Public Schools at the state level is an incredible accomplishment, and we are so proud of the impact she continues to make on students and education. We love seeing moments like this as Mrs. Duncan connected with state leaders and fellow educators during the recognition events. She had the opportunity to meet Governor Abigail Spanberger, First Gentleman Adam Spanberger, Secretary of Education Jeffery Smith, and Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons during the recognition event celebrating educators from across the Commonwealth. Thank you, Mrs. Duncan, for the dedication, care, and leadership you bring to your students and school community each day.
