Before the Thanksgiving break, Mrs. Cable’s kindergartners at Powhatan Elementary read “How to Hide a Turkey” and completed activities around it, did an activity about thankfulness, and made thankfulness placemats they could take home. Mr. Barnes’ Probability and Statistics and AP Statistics classes at Powhatan High School were invited to Mr. Beasley’s Engineering Explorations 1 class to collaborate on an activity involving unfair carnival games. The engineering students designed and built unfair carnival games, and Mr. Barnes’ students were tasked with calculating the probabilities of win percentages. In a future unit, the students will revisit the data to run hypothesis tests comparing the calculated probabilities to the claimed win percentages. #wearepcps #teampowhatan #elevateeducatorsva

Powhatan High School students and staff were encouraged to wear yellow on Nov. 15 for Remembrance Day. The School Counseling Department selected this day to remember any loved ones who have passed away. The holiday season can be an especially difficult time. In addition to wearing yellow – PHS counselors also invited students and staff to fill out a remembrance card during lunch. These notes were strung up and draped across the school’s LOVE sign to remember and honor loved ones who are no longer with us. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

An estimated six million skeletons are housed in underground tunnels in the Catacombs of Paris. The site of endless skulls stacked on top of each other lining the walks is a striking one and one recently waiting for Mrs. Arnold’s French classes and Mr. Baker’s World Cultures class at Powhatan Middle School. Over several days, the students studied the Catacombs and the Père Lachaise Cemetery as part of a cultural exploration of All Saints’ Day. After studying the Catacombs and their history and purpose, the students got to explore a recreation in Mrs. Arnold’s classroom and learn about five famous French historical figures. #wearepcps #teampowhatan #elevateeducatorsva
