Here’s a quick preview from Monday’s senior group photos at Powhatan High School! 🎓We captured the full Class of 2026, students who have attended PCPS from kindergarten through senior year, and a small “futures” photo featuring seniors showing off their next steps after graduation.
These are just behind-the-scenes preview shots; information about the official school photos will be shared later and will look much better than the quick versions posted here.

The following message was emailed to families of PHS parents, but we want to make sure all of our seniors and their families see it:
Dear PHS Families and Graduates,
Due to the forecast and the potential for inclement weather, we have made the decision to move the Powhatan High School graduation ceremony indoors to our main gymnasium. While we had hoped to celebrate outdoors, this decision allows us to ensure a safe and organized event for our graduates and guests.
Graduation will still take place on Thursday, May 21st at 7:00 PM. Doors will open at 6:00PM
As a reminder, due to space constraints, each graduate will be allotted tickets as follows:
* 5 gymnasium tickets
* 2 auditorium tickets
Guests seated in the auditorium will have access to a live stream of the 2026 Graduation Ceremony. We will also have a link for anyone who wishes to view the live stream video.
Additionally, we have attached information regarding parking for the ceremony.
We appreciate your understanding, flexibility, and continued support as we celebrate the Class of 2026 and this important milestone.
Sincerely,
PHS Administration

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Hintz’s class at Powhatan Elementary focused on building early math and money skills last week as they learned to identify coins and understand their value. Through hands-on activities and practice, students worked on recognizing different coins and connecting them to their worth as they built real-world learning skills.

Even as the end of the school year quickly approaches, we know we have some great moments from earlier this semester that we haven’t shared yet, including this creative project from Powhatan High School. Students in Mrs. McManus’ adaptive art class drew inspiration from Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night as they created their own mixed media villages featuring some of their favorite places. The project gave students the opportunity to explore creativity while experimenting with different artistic techniques and materials.

Powhatan Elementary School wrapped up the Kids Heart Challenge at the end of April with a rescheduled special awards ceremony. During American Heart Month in February, the school highlighted the importance of taking care of their hearts by being physically active every day, eating fruits and vegetables, sleeping at least 10 hours at night, and staying away from smoke. They also learned the warning signs of a stroke, practiced how to do hands-only CPR, and completed several cardiovascular activities.
During the awards ceremony, the students from each grade level with the highest fundraising totals got the opportunity to push a pie in the face of brave staff members. In total, 99 students registered for the challenge, raising $16,373.13 for the American Heart Association. In addition, 33 families learned hands-only CPR, and all students K-5 learned hands-only CPR in class. A big thank you to Savanah Beatley, school engagement director for the American Heart Association, for joining the celebration.

First grade students in Ms. Madden’s class at Pocahontas Elementary recently embraced the role of author as they created their own fairytales. As part of the writing process, students shared their stories with classmates, using feedback to revise before completing their final copies. Each story included key literary elements like a beginning, middle, and end, along with new vocabulary, illustrations, and a focus on grammar, capitalization, and punctuation.

We want to once again congratulate Paula Duncan on being recognized as a Virginia Teacher of the Year finalist. Representing Powhatan County Public Schools at the state level is an incredible accomplishment, and we are so proud of the impact she continues to make on students and education. We love seeing moments like this as Mrs. Duncan connected with state leaders and fellow educators during the recognition events. She had the opportunity to meet Governor Abigail Spanberger, First Gentleman Adam Spanberger, Secretary of Education Jeffery Smith, and Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons during the recognition event celebrating educators from across the Commonwealth. Thank you, Mrs. Duncan, for the dedication, care, and leadership you bring to your students and school community each day.

We already shared coverage from local news stations highlighting Powhatan High School’s Military Signing Day on Tuesday. As promised, we also wanted to share some photos from this special event. Military Signing Day recognized students who have chosen to serve our country through military enlistment after graduation. Surrounded by family, friends, staff, and community members, students celebrated an important milestone and the next step in their journey. We’re proud of these young men and women and grateful for their commitment to service.

Powhatan High School celebrated Career and Workforce Development Signing Day last week to recognize students as they took the next step toward their futures. Fifteen students signed letters of intent across a variety of fields, including electricity, building trades, agriculture mechanics and fabrication, cosmetology, and JROTC. Some students committed directly to employers, while others signed with universities as part of their continued education and service plans. The event highlighted the meaningful connections students have built with employers and postsecondary opportunities as they prepare for life after graduation. PHS was also excited to welcome alumnus Nathan Poe, Class of 2019, as this year’s guest speaker. Congratulations to all of the students recognized during this special event.

Teacher Appreciation Week is underway, and we are so excited to see and hear about the treats planned by our schools and parent groups to highlight the people who make our schools such special places. Knowing this week would be slammed, our Human Resources team hosted staff appreciation lunches across the division in April, treating the staff at each school along with Transportation and the Pocahontas Landmark Center. It was a small way to recognize the big impact our teachers and staff have every day. This week, we’ll be sharing photos from those visits, starting with Powhatan Middle School. We invite our community to join us in showing appreciation throughout the week.
