Mrs. Winston’s and Mrs. Garner’s seventh-grade English classes took their study of “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton a step further last week with a visit to the Innovation Lab. Working with Dr. Spott, students collaborated in small groups to design and build amusement parks inspired by the novel’s characters, themes, and events in the novel – helping build a deeper connection to the text through creativity and teamwork.

Powhatan High School’s Culinary program includes a critical component called Bailey’s Café. Usually offered twice a week in late spring, every culinary class plays a role in making it happen, whether preparing food in advance or helping run the café when it is open. Pictured here, you can see Culinary 1 students cooking for and serving staff members their delicious lunches earlier this semester. Led by Mr. Robertson, the café offers students the chance to build skills in food preparation, teamwork, and customer service. Through experiences like Bailey’s Café, students can apply their learning in a real-world setting while developing skills they can carry with them beyond the classroom.

Art, ideas, and a lot of creativity – our AP Art students are ready to share the work they’ve been creating. Fifteen Powhatan High School artists will each showcase a series of pieces built around their own personal themes. The public is invited to stop by, check out their work, and see the different directions their creativity has taken them. The AP Art Exhibition will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 at Powhatan War Memorial Cultural Arts & Community Center, 2375 Skaggs Road. Refreshments will be available, and Artist Awards will be announced at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Ms. Wirt’s art students at Powhatan High School stepped into the role of studio photographers during a recent creative portrait project. The classroom was transformed into multiple studio spaces where students experimented with lighting, poses, and props to create dynamic portraits. Powhatan Elementary has a new way to show school pride with the addition of a Spirit Rock on campus. This project came together thanks to strong community support. A big thank you to the PTO for the idea, planning, and painting, and to the team at Luck Stone for helping select and deliver the rock. The Spirit Rock will serve as a fun and lasting way to celebrate students and build excitement and school pride across the school, with more ideas already in the works.

Fifth grades at Pocahontas Elementary found a thoughtful way to give back to staff last week. With support from Ms. Brooks and Mrs. Henderson, students created a “refresh bar” for teachers and staff as a way to show appreciation for all they do. Families donated supplies and drinks, and Chick-fil-A contributed tea to help make it possible. Staff members could also choose a tiny new pet and accompanying positive message. More than just a kind gesture, the project gave students a chance to learn about gratitude, service, and the impact of giving back to their school community.

Students in Mrs. Ashman’s Forensic Science class at Powhatan High School put their investigative skills to the test earlier this semester during their arson unit. Students designed and built model houses, adding furniture and occupants, and created a backstory in which a fire in the home started either accidentally or intentionally. In the next phase of the project, the class headed outside, where Mrs. Ashman ignited each house according to the group’s scenario while students observed how the fire spread. In the following class, students stepped into the role of fire investigators, analyzing another group’s scene to determine whether the fire was the result of arson or accidental causes.

During two school assemblies held in March, students listened as African storyteller Ada Ari read stories and performed. Her visit, connected to Black History Month and Women’s History Month, gave students an interactive experience filled with dancing, storytelling, and hands-on exploration of cultural artifacts. Ms. Ari has written children’s books inspired by folk tales from countries across Africa, along with African language board books representing more than 40 languages and activity books that extend the learning. She also gives back, donating a portion of proceeds to orphanages across the continent.

Second graders in Ms. Tyson’s class at Flat Rock Elementary recently turned review for their place value assessment into an interactive challenge with the help of Innovative Learning Coach Ms. Bentzen. Students used Ozobots to complete an “Egg Hunt Challenge,” solving problems focused on place value, expanded form, word form, comparing and ordering numbers, and skip counting. Each correct answer unlocked colors code for their Ozobot to help guide it along its path. Once they successfully coded a new stop for their Ozobot, students earned the chance to hunt for an egg with a treat inside.

Detective Hylton and Detective Joyner from the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office recently led cybersecurity assemblies for fifth graders at all three elementary schools focused on digital safety and online behavior. The sessions aimed to help students navigate the digital world securely by teaching them to protect their personal information and critically evaluate the content they see online. The detectives covered a wide range of vital topics, including cyberbullying, the realities of artificial intelligence (AI), identity theft, and social media behavior and security. A common thread ran through all of the topics – being careful about what they share because the internet is forever.

Kindergarteners in Miss Stimpson’s class at Pocahontas Elementary were busy building their literacy skills through engaging stations on Wednesday. Students rotated through activities like a writing station focused on bugs, a “popcorn” game to practice letter sounds, a write-the-room activity with targeted sounds, and a digraph sort. The sale continues in the PHS Greenhouse from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday April 17, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 18. Take Judes Ferry Road to Old Church Road. Turn by the tennis courts and follow the road to the greenhouse behind the school. Cash or Check only. All sales benefit the PHS FFA and Horticulture programs.

Powhatan Elementary students brought their reading buddies to life in a big way last week! 📚🧸 As part of the Stuff’d Pals Reading Buddy Fundraiser, 109 students who met their goals had the chance to create their very own stuffed reading pal. These photos capture those special moments as their new friends were stuffed right before their eyes. The event was a huge success, raising $18,666, with funds slated to support school beautification and enhancements. 🧡🖤

History came alive in March in Mr. Nester’s and Mr. Mullins’ classes in a fun and competitive way with the annual World History I Championship! 🏆 Modeled after a March Madness-style bracket, 64 people, places, events, and ideas from the World History I curriculum were seeded and faced off in head-to-head matchups. Students reviewed and voted each round to decide what they believed was most significant in world history – until one champion remained.
Now in its fourth year, this activity continues to be a favorite, sparking thoughtful debates, energetic discussions, and deeper connections to history. Previous winners – who are retired and can’t compete again – were Jesus (2023), Fire (2024), and Abraham (2025).
In a neck-and-neck competition, 2026 champion Jerusalem beat Rome in a 100-to-99 vote victory. 🧡🖤
