Due to the winter weather expected to begin during the morning commute and continue throughout the day, Powhatan County Public Schools will be closed on Monday, December 8th. All activities scheduled for December 8th are cancelled. PCPS staff, please check your email.
We recognize this change may be inconvenient for many families, but we are acting out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of our students and staff. We also wanted to notify you early so you can make necessary plans.

Let’s see if these snow day vibes can fuel a flurry of creativity! The Virginia Lottery’s 9th annual Thank a Teacher Art Contest is open for entries. We would love to have many of our Powhatan students participate and let their artistic talents shine. They could win big prizes for themselves and their school! Details and submission guidelines can be found below.

This notice is being provided in accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act due to the possibility that a quorum of school board members may be in attendance.
No official business will be conducted, and no votes or decisions will be made by the School Board at this event.

Powhatan County Public Schools is committed to supporting the well-being of our students, families, and community. As part of our Powhatan Strong: Family Connection Series, we are partnering with Goochland Powhatan Community Services to offer a free virtual course on Suicide Prevention: Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR).
This training will provide participants with the skills to recognize the common causes and warning signs of suicidal behavior and how to get help for someone in crisis. Attendees will learn how to appropriately Question, Persuade, and Refer someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts.
The course will be held virtually on December 15, 2025, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Space is limited to 30 participants.

The Virginia Department of Education is proud to announce the Virginia 250 Passport in partnership with the VA250 Commission and supported by the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC). In 2026, the United States marks its 250th anniversary. This historic milestone – extraordinary in our lifetimes – provides the ideal moment to come together, better understand our shared past, and renew our commitment to the pursuit of A More Perfect Union.
In partnership, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC), Colonial Williamsburg, George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Virginia Tourism Corporation, and the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission created the Virginia 250 Passport.
This commemorative passport is a history travel guide, discount book, and 250th keepsake! From November 11, 2025, through December 31, 2026, participants can collect unique stamps at 70 history sites and museums across the Commonwealth, receive special pricing on admission, and enter to win prizes. Passports are available at no cost at the VMHC and select locations across the state.

Get ready for a night of mystery, music, and all-around fun! 🎤🎭 Join us Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Powhatan High School auditorium for Masked Singer: Teacher Edition – where our own staff take the stage in full disguise. Come cheer on your favorites and try to guess who’s behind the mask. You might be surprised! Tickets are $5 at the door. Jackson and Alex Fife, two creative students at Powhatan Middle School, recently shared their love of 3D- building with a special gift for their peers. Through their family nonprofit, Fife’s Fun with Filament, they used 3-D printers to create 125 fidgets – 25 for each PCPS school – to help students manage stress and stay focused. The donation was presented during ACCT with Principal Colin Innes, Superintendent Beth Teigen, and School Board Chair Susan Smith in attendance. 🧡 #WeArePCPS #TeamPowhatan

At Tuesday night's meeting, the School Board recognized the winners of the seven Classroom Innovation Grants awarded this year by the Powhatan Education Foundation (PEF). These grants, which total $16,168.99 this year, support creative projects that enrich instruction, spark student curiosity, and strengthen connections with our community.

Grant Recipients:

* Loren Jacobs, Powhatan High School, $1,888.99 for “Touch & Learn: An Interactive Display to Ignite Curiosity in High School.”

* Kelly Terry, Flat Rock Elementary, $2,775 for “Take a Future View Into Immersive Digital Learning with ViewSonic Interactive ViewBoards.”

* Libbey Kitten, Instructional Specialist – Science, $2,000 for “From Powhatan to the Stars: Inspiring Student Curiosity with a Traveling Planetarium.”

* Barbara Adcock, Pocahontas Elementary, $1,960 for “Energy Transfer: Insulators and Conductors of Thermal Energy.”

* Rebekah Crump, Pocahontas Elementary, $2,545 for “Powering the Future.”

* Jana Ford, Pocahontas Elementary, $2,000 for “Second Grade Outdoor Learning Space.”

* Athea Hudson and Tracy Ingle, Powhatan High School, $3,000 for “Renaissance Festival.”

Ahead of Veterans Day, Powhatan Middle School students put their creativity and gratitude to work in ACCT, making more than 350 cards to thank our veterans for their service. Mrs. Arnold and Mrs. Antone delivered the cards to Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where they were shared with veterans in a special Veterans Day celebration on November 7. ❤️🤍💙🧡🖤 #WeArePCPS #TeamPowhatan

🗳️ Leading up to Election Day, kindergarten students in Mrs. Senger’s class at Pocahontas Elementary were introduced to important new vocabulary words about voting, laws, and government through their All About Voting workbooks. The age-appropriate social studies lesson helped the students approach really big concepts through examples they could understand. When the lesson was over, they made the books even more special by coloring them. 🧡 #WeArePCPS #TeamPowhatan

🗳️ It’s never too early to learn about the importance of voting! Kindergarten students at Pocahontas Elementary participated in their own class election, casting ballots to decide between two beloved candidates – Duck and Clifford.
