School bus transportation plays a critical role in the education of our nation's students, and is the direct link between your homes and the classroom. More than 25 million children ride the yellow bus every school day, and National School Bus Safety Week serves as a reminder for students, parents, teachers, and the community to keep school bus safety in the forefront. Here are tips to keep our children safe at the bus stop. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Background is a bus driving down a rural road in fall. Text that reads: School Bus Safety Week. Oct. 16-20, 2023. Tip 2: Walking to the Bus Stop Walk young children to the bus stop or encourage children to walk in groups. There is safety in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see. Practice good pedestrian behavior: walk on the sidewalk, and if there is no sidewalk stay out of the street. If you must walk in the street, walk single file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as you can. Stop and look left, right and then left again if you must cross the street. Do the same thing at drive -ways and alleys. Exaggerate your head turns and narrate your actions so your child knows you are looking left, right and left.
Powhatan County Public Schools will be recognizing Bullying Prevention Week October 16-20. We are asking our students to “pledge to support others that have been hurt or harmed and treat others with kindness.” We are asking all PCPS students to wear orange on Wednesday 18, 2023, for “Unity Day.” #wearepcps #teampowhatan

A rural scene with a school bus full of people and text that reads: School Bus Safety Week. Oct. 16-20, 2023. Tip 1: Getting Ready for School Have your children put everything they carry in a backpack or school bag so that they won’t drop things along the way. Encourage them to wear bright, contrasting colors so they will be more easily seen by drivers. Make sure children leave home on time so they can arrive at the bus stop before it is due, ideally at least five minutes early. Running after or in front of a bus is dangerous.
Students and families at Powhatan High School came together on Oct. 4 to learn more about the community-based internships that students will be participating in during the 2023-2024 school year. Look for them around town at: Powhatan County Public Library, Elizabeth Randolph Lewis Powhatan YMCA, Sodexo, Powhatan State Park, Rise and Grind, Backpacks of Love, and Herff Jones. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Through the action of a committed group of youth with disabilities, the General Assembly officially recognized October as Disability History and Awareness Month (DHAM). The youth also developed this credo: Disability history education and awareness will promote positive attitudes in schools creating a culture of mutual respect, understanding, and equal opportunities for all. This month highlights the success that Virginians with disabilities have had reducing barriers they have faced to employment, healthcare, education and community living, while helping raise awareness of the ongoing contributions and achievements that they bring to the Commonwealth throughout the year.

PCPS is looking for community members who are interested in helping us create our next Six-Year Technology Plan. The technology plan will guide us as we purchase, integrate, and support technology over the next six years. The plan provides a roadmap not just for how our technology will support classroom instruction, but also how we can use technology to support internet safety, business operations, and network security. The first meeting will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 17. If you would like to have a voice in these decisions by joining our committee, please contact Jeff Durrett, Director of Technology, at jdurrett@powhatan.k12.va.us.

A photo of a woman and text that reads: PLEASE Welcome New PCPS Employees Laura McFarland. Communications Liaison. My name is Laura McFarland, and I am ecstatic to be the division’s new communications liaison. The position represents a big transition for me as I have been focused on a career in journalism (primarily newspapers) since I was a freshman in high school. For the last nine years, I brought people the news as the editor of the Powhatan Today. About Me I have eclectic interests, some of which include hiking, quilting, reading, and the occasional retail therapy (in the form of thrift store treasure hunts). Despite years of claiming to only kill plants (mostly true), I have successfully kept a house plant named Stryker alive for more than a decade and just this year took up gardening using an old wood pallet.
Having clean schools is an essential part of making sure our students have a safe place to learn. Today is National Custodian Day, so we want to give a huge shout out to all of the men and women who work for HES, some of whom are shown here, and take care of our buildings both day and night. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

The Lunch Buddies Mentoring Program has been in place in Powhatan County Public Schools for the last 10 years. The goal of the program is to help foster strong relationships among our students and the positive adult role models in the community. Whether at any of our 3 elementary schools or our middle school, you would meet with a student once a week and ultimately act as another advocate for them. It can be anything from academic support to conversation, playing games, making crafts, and so much more. The program is planned to begin the first week of October and will last until mid-May, when SOL testing begins in our upper grade levels. If you are interested in participating as a mentor for the Lunch Buddies Program, we would be happy to have you! Please apply using the QR code or reach out to lunchbuddies@powhatan.k12.va.us for any questions.
