Solving Problems Together: Who to Contact?

We have noticed an uptick in rude, unkind, and insensitive comments towards peers or in various conversations throughout the day. When talking with students, we remind them to choose their words appropriately and accurately. We encourage all our students to be safe, respectful, and responsible with their conversations daily. Students should use proper language at all times here at school, in the hallways, and on the bus.

High School Activity Bus: Students attending sports conditioning at the high school may not ride the sports shuttle bus; this bus is reserved for students who are in their current athletic season. Families must provide transportation.

Student Pick Up Reminders: When visiting or picking up your child during the school day, please bring a photo ID, ring the doorbell to the right, identify yourself, and state the reason for visiting the building. In preparation for dismissal, all early dismissal must be before 2:00 p.m. unless extenuating circumstances. Please allow additional time for your child to be called down for dismissal, as we are unable to call students down in advance until a photo ID has been checked and verified. Student safety is our top priority and these protocols help keep our students safe - thank you for your support!

October is Bullying Prevention Month.

During this month, we will provide some tips and information about how to recognize and prevent bullying and strategies to empower students to be upstanders in our community. We encourage our students that if they see something, they need to say something.
Understanding What Bullying Is (The 3 core components)
Bullying is distinct from general peer disagreements or rude behavior. For an action to be defined as bullying, look for three specific criteria:
1. Intentional Harm: The behavior is aggressive and intended to hurt, intimidate, or humiliate.
2. Repeated Over Time: It happens repeatedly, or there is a strong likelihood it will happen again.
3. Imbalance of Power: The aggressor uses a real or perceived advantage (such as size, age, etc.) to control or hurt the target.
Action Step: If your child comes to you upset, use these 3 components to help determine whether they are experiencing normal peer conflict or bullying behavior.
Any suspected bullying should be reported directly to your student's administrator or counselor.

Fall Dances!

Save the Date for our Fall Dances! We are well under way planning and our Student Leadership is graciously spearheading the dance! We will host two Fall Dances again, both on Friday, October 16th. Save the date for now and tickets will be on sale the week of October 5th.
- The 6th grade Fall Dance will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
- 7th & 8th grade Fall Dance will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
- Volunteer Options: We are in need of several volunteers, including set up, concessions, dance supervision, carnival games, and clean up. We are also going to do a "cake walk" in the courtyard and are in need of donations. Visit our Powhatan Middle Fall Dance Volunteer Sign Up Genius if you are able to help! Any help is good help!
