The Powhatan Middle School PTO had a huge turnout last week for its Dodgeball Tournament, which saw adults and young people diving, ducking, and dodging their way to a great night of competition. Thank you to the PMS students, parents, teachers and staff who participated in this awesome event in the middle school gym and to those who came to cheer from a (mostly) safe distance. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Just a reminder to our middle school parents about this event happening today: Powhatan Middle School will host an evening of “Non-traditional High School Options” with representatives from the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies, Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology, Code RVA High School and the Powhatan High School/Reynolds Community College for Advanced College Academy Program on Oct. 9, 2023. The purpose of this meeting is to provide interested students and their parents with information regarding the curriculum, graduation requirements, extracurricular activities, as well as answer questions regarding the application process for each high school option. Although the application process is open to current eighth grade students, fifth, sixth and seventh grade students and their parents are also invited to attend in order to assist in course planning before they reach the eighth grade. The evening will kick off with a review of Powhatan County Public Schools’ participation in these schools as well as answer some of the basic questions students and parents have about student participation in these high school program options. Applications will be available beginning on Oct. 13 from Mrs. Haskins in the Gifted Services office (B210) and Mrs. Baldwin in the school counseling office. Applications will be available to students currently enrolled in Algebra I. Private and homeschool families seeking applications will need to schedule an appointment with Mrs. Haskins to come to Powhatan Middle School, provide proof of residency and pick up an application. Applications cannot be mailed. The deadline for eighth graders to submit an application is Dec. 1, 2023.

Today is National Instructional Coach Day, when we honor the men and women who work with teachers to improve the quality of their lessons and the quality of students' education. These instructional coaches, some of whom are shown here, serve as mentors and role models, helping teachers stay fresh and use the latest techniques and technologies in their classrooms. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

Sixth graders in Miss Cuneo’s art class learned about collages and making a color wheel. The students cut out pieces of magazines to fill out their color wheels. The project acts as an introduction to get comfortable with the color wheel and color theory. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

A photo of a woman and text that reads: PLEASE Welcome New PCPS Employees Laura McFarland. Communications Liaison. My name is Laura McFarland, and I am ecstatic to be the division’s new communications liaison. The position represents a big transition for me as I have been focused on a career in journalism (primarily newspapers) since I was a freshman in high school. For the last nine years, I brought people the news as the editor of the Powhatan Today. About Me I have eclectic interests, some of which include hiking, quilting, reading, and the occasional retail therapy (in the form of thrift store treasure hunts). Despite years of claiming to only kill plants (mostly true), I have successfully kept a house plant named Stryker alive for more than a decade and just this year took up gardening using an old wood pallet.
Ms. Monson’s eighth grade physical science class at Powhatan Middle School took advantage of the beautiful weather Monday to do a lesson about heat transfer (radiation, conduction, convection) using a solar balloon. “It allows students to see that when air gets hot it becomes less dense and floats,” Monson said. #wearepcps #teampowhatan #elevateeducatorsva

Having clean schools is an essential part of making sure our students have a safe place to learn. Today is National Custodian Day, so we want to give a huge shout out to all of the men and women who work for HES, some of whom are shown here, and take care of our buildings both day and night. #wearepcps #teampowhatan

The Lunch Buddies Mentoring Program has been in place in Powhatan County Public Schools for the last 10 years. The goal of the program is to help foster strong relationships among our students and the positive adult role models in the community. Whether at any of our 3 elementary schools or our middle school, you would meet with a student once a week and ultimately act as another advocate for them. It can be anything from academic support to conversation, playing games, making crafts, and so much more. The program is planned to begin the first week of October and will last until mid-May, when SOL testing begins in our upper grade levels. If you are interested in participating as a mentor for the Lunch Buddies Program, we would be happy to have you! Please apply using the QR code or reach out to lunchbuddies@powhatan.k12.va.us for any questions.

Mrs. Arnett’s sixth graders at Powhatan Middle School started off math class with a game on Gimkit called The Floor is Lava. Gimkit is a classroom game-show platform where students compete by answering questions on their Chromebooks. Instead of earning points, students earn virtual currency, which they can "invest" during the game to boost their score. #wearepcps #teampowhatan
