What Is Child Find?

Child Find is a federally and state-mandated process to locate, identify, and evaluate children from birth through age 21 who may have a disability and need special education and related services.

We Serve Children:
  • From birth through age 21

  • Who live in Powhatan County

  • Who may have a developmental delay or disability that may impact learning

The Special Education Child Find Process

  1. Referral

    1. A parent, guardian, teacher, healthcare provider, or community member may refer a child who may have a developmental delay or disability.

  2. Screening

    1. We gather information and conduct a brief screening to determine if further evaluation is needed.

  3. Evaluation

    1. With parent consent, a comprehensive evaluation is completed to determine eligibility.

  4. Eligibility

    1. The IEP team reviews results to determine if the child is eligible for special education and related services.

  5. Services & Support

    1. If eligible, we develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and begin services to support success.
