Last week, Miss Morton’s kindergarten class at Pocahontas Elementary talked about shadows and how they are created. Students learned three things are needed to make a shadow: a light source, a surface, and an object to block the light. The students also did an activity where they traced their own shadows and did another one where they took groundhogs they drew, put them on sticks, and took them outside to measure the groundhogs' shadows in the sun. #wearepcps #teampowhatan
National School Counseling Week 2024 (#NSCW24) is being recognized from Feb. 5-9, 2024, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Pocahontas Elementary kicked off the American Heart Challenge on Friday with grade-level assemblies. Students learned about eight character traits to support healthy hearts. They were also encouraged to complete Finn’s mission by learning about Hands Only CPR to be prepared to help others in a cardiac event. All three elementary schools will participate in the coming weeks in the American Heart Challenge. Mrs. Morris’ kindergarten class at Pocahontas Elementary did group work that saw them dividing up to do activities such as work on their Chromebooks, enjoy book time, and “Write the Room,” where they have to find objects throughout the classroom and practice writing the words. #wearepcps #teampowhatan
Are you a Powhatan grandparent raising a grandchild? Grandparents Raising Grandchildren is a weekly group offering support and resources for grandparents raising grandchildren. The group meets on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon at 3910 Old Buckingham Road. Learn how to process and navigate common challenges.
Powhatan High School senior Hunter Atkins, who is part of the Teacher for Tomorrow 2 class, shadowed Mr. Freund’s P.E. classes at Pocahontas Elementary School as they warmed up and played floor hockey. As part of this Career and Workforce Development program, Hunter is building up experience to do a lesson of his own. When alerts such as notice of school delays or closings are sent out, the notifications through the app appear to be the one of the fast means of receiving the information. Powhatan County Public Schools is now accepting ECSE Preschool applications. Applications are available through Feb. 9, 2024. In-person screenings/play dates will be scheduled from Feb. 12-23. All children must participate in the screening and play date in order to be considered for this program. The Powhatan County School Board will hold its workshop at 4 p.m. today. The board will elect its leadership for 2024, but the rest of the agenda may be amended due to concerns about road conditions after 5 p.m. Any items on the agenda that are not heard will be added to a workshop and regular meeting on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

Due to weather and road conditions, Powhatan County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Offices will be closed, and staff will not report. Any after-school or evening activities will be rescheduled. A decision will be forthcoming about the Powhatan School Board workshop and meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 16.
Some interesting noises were coming out of Ms. Brooks’s fifth-grade class at Pocahontas Elementary when they studied a unit on sound. The students’ acoustic explorations included making bee hummers (when you swing them, they sound like a swarm of bees near you), pitch pipes using straws, and old-fashioned telephones using cups and string. Yet another station with a row of bottles demonstrated how varying amounts of water can change the pitch when tapped. #wearepcps #teampowhatan
