Powhatan Middle School offers an interscholastic athletic and academic competition program for students in grades 6-8. The middle school is a member of the Southside Middle School Conference (SMSC) competing in nine athletic and two academic competitions. The Southside Middle School Conference: The Southside Middle School Conference governs all competition that takes place by the members. The conference has a strict set of rules that all members must abide by. Many of these by-laws are patterned after the rules and regulations set forth by the VHSL (Virginia High School League), however Powhatan Middle School is obviously not part of the VHSL. At the middle school level throughout the state of Virginia, the local league governs all competitions within a specific league (i.e. Chesterfield Middle School League, Henrico-Hanover Middle School League, etc.)

Level of Competition: The teams that compete in the SMSC are very competitive. This program is not like a community recreation program which is geared to allow all players equal playing time. It is very similar to a high school junior varsity level of play. A tournament is held and a league champion is named in each sport (currently with the exception of Cross Country). While the competition level is high, the length of the season is shortened. In each case, it is shorter than it would be on the high school level due to the younger ages of the students.

Physicals: A student must have a physical dated May 1 or later of the current school year in order to try out. The physical is good for the entire school year, and expires at the end of the spring season (ACE and Forensics do not require physicals)

Eligibility: If a student is promoted into the next grade, they are eligible to try out for fall and winter athletics. A student must not fail more than one class per semester in order to be eligible for the following semester.
