Powhatan County Public Schools' Gifted Services will host representatives from the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School for Government and International Studies and the Appomattox Regional Governor's School for the Arts and Technology for two afternoon recruitment meetings. The purpose of these meetings is to provide interested students and their parents with information regarding the schools' curriculum, graduation requirements, extra curricular activities, as well as answer questions regarding the application process for each school. Although the application process is open to current eighth grade students, fifth, sixth and seventh grade students and their parents are also invited to attend in order to assist in course planning before they reach the eighth grade. Representatives from Appomattox Regional Governor's School will present their informational session on Monday, October 7. On Monday October 14, representatives from the Maggie Walker Governor's School will present information regarding their school's program of studies. Both information sessions run from 4:00 to approximately 5:00 PM in the PJHS Library. Parents and students interested in learning more about these Governor's Schools are encouraged to attend the informational sessions.
From 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. on both October 7th and October 14, there will be an additional information session on a new option for students, known as the Advance College Academy. This program provides a pathway to earn an Associate's Degree through J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College while concurrently earning a diploma from Powhatan High school. Interested students should apply for this program as eighth graders, but, as with the Governor's Schools, fifth, sixth, and seventh graders and their parents are invited to learn about the requirements as well.
Parents and students unable to attend the Governor's Schools' visitations to the junior high are encouraged to attend the Informational sessions held in November. These sessions provide students and their parents the opportunity to tour the school, meet staff and administrators as well as students. Maggie L. Walker Governor's School will hold their session on October 30 at 6:30 p.m. and Appomattox Regional Governor's School is scheduled to present their informational meeting on November 7 at 6:30 p.m.

Walker Governor's School for Government and International Studies and the Appomattox Regional Governor's School for the Arts and Technology will be available to 8th Grade students from Mrs. Haskins in the Office of Gifted Services or Mrs. Baldwin in the School Counseling Office at Powhatan Junior High School beginning October 15.
