English Language Learners

The ELL department of Powhatan County is committed to helping limited English speakers achieve their educational goals.

Using a collaborative approach, the ELL department works with both the student's classroom teacher and the family to provide a friendly environment with a focus on academic success.

The goals of ELL instruction are:

  • To increase the student's expressive vocabulary
  • To anticipate and teach the vocabulary of instruction and assessment
  • To increase reading comprehension
  • To provide English writing instruction
  • To act as a instructional liaison for families new to this country

Curriculum and Instruction

Our curriculum and instruction is in alignment with Grade Level Standards of Learning in Virginia. In addition, Powhatan County Public Schools incorporate the World Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Development (ELD) standards.
