Character Education

The Purpose of Character Education:

To develop civic-minded students, in cooperation with the parents and community, who will be prepared for leadership in today's global society and beyond.


Principles of Character Education:

  • To promote core ethical values as the basis of good character
  • To be comprehensively defined to include thinking, feeling and behavior
  • To promote the school environment as a caring community
  • To include a meaningful and challenging academic curriculum that respects all learners and helps them succeed
  • To strive to develop students' intrinsic motivation
  • To integrate the core ethical values in all phases of school life
  • To promote the school learning community where all school staff model the same core values expected of students


Building Character for Success:

  • Honesty -- trustworthiness, integrity, reliability and loyalty
  • Respect -- including the precepts of the Golden Rule, tolerance and courtesy
  • Charity -- including charity and generosity
  • Responsibility -- including hard work, economic self-reliance, accountability, diligence, perseverance and self-control
  • Fairness -- including justice, consequences of bad behavior, and principles of consideration
  • Citizenship -- including patriotism, the Pledge of Allegiance, respect for the American Flag, concern for the common good, respect for authority and the law and community-mindedness
  • Character Traits will be emphasized in all schools according to the following schedule:

Honesty - October
Respect - November
Charity - December
Responsibility - January
Fairness - February
Citizenship - March 

In addition to the above, schools will plan various other activities to promote positive character traits.
