2019 PCPS Summer Camps Details

Passionate Educators
Powhatan County Public Schools showcase a summer staff that includes highly-engaging educators excited about learning and skilled at equipping students to become life-long learners.

Diverse Offerings
The camp offerings target all learners and span a wide range of curricula. Our camp focus is the whole student and developing multi-faceted skills including teamwork, problem-solving, collaboration, flexibility, written and spoken communication, as well as goal setting.

Times and Locations
Summer Camps will be held at Powhatan High School or Flat Rock Elementary School. Please see the camp descriptions for the specific location of your camp. Camp hours are 8:00 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.(Flat Rock Elementary School) /12:45 P.M. (Powhatan High School). There will be a 15-minute snack break during the day. Snacks are not provided.

Bus transportation is available for summer camp pick-up and drop-off for Powhatan High School and Flat Rock Elementary School during the month of July only. The buses will make stops at specific areas throughout the county. The bus routes will be posted online and at each camp location prior to the start of camp so you can decide the bus stop that is the most convenient for you.

Some camps have a minimum enrollment requirement. If a camp does not meet minimum enrollment requirements, parents will be notified and monies will be refunded.

Registration and Payment
Camp registrations and payments need to be made by May 31, 2019. Payments can be made by cash, check, or online. Online payments will not be available until April 16. Checks need to be made payable to Powhatan High School. Online payments can be made using credit or debit cards through your school’s website. Camp payments are non-refundable. Students will not be considered registered until payment has been received. Please send registration and payments to:

Enrichment Camp Offerings

  • El Mundo Hispanohablante - Spanish Language and Culture

Dates: July 15-18
Grade(s): Rising 1- 5
Description: This camp is a terrific way for students to learn the Spanish language and culture while enjoying summer fun. It is designed to immerse the student in the Spanish language and culture through the 5 senses. Each day we will have a theme to
focus the language and cultural learning. The students will learn and practice new vocabulary and utilize that vocabulary while experiencing the culture through a culinary dish, an art project, singing, dancing, and games.

  • Fun with Science and STEM

  • Harry Potter: A Week at Hogwarts

Description: Have you always dreamed of finding a Hogwarts letter on your doorstep? Have you ever had an urge to follow flying spiders or flying keys? This is the camp for you! Join us to find out if you are a true Gryffindor at heart or is there a Slytherin just dying to come out. We will produce our patronuses, create our own wands, compete in a scavenger hunt and visit Honeydukes to try your first chocolate frog! Only potential witches and wizards, please. Muggles need not apply.

  • Heads Up Camp

Description: Campers will have fun while learning braiding techniques and using a curling iron or wand! Come and practice creating the latest hairstyles!

  • Le Monde Francophone - French Language and Culture

  • Mindfulness Matters

Description: Relax and reflect at a summer camp unlike any other. At Mindfulness Matters, you will learn the importance of being in the moment while accepting your own thoughts, feelings, and bodily emotions. You'll get to learn and practice mindfulness tools (yoga, deep breathing, nature walks, creating artwork, expressing gratitude and more) to help reduce stress and anxiety that may come with everyday life. And lastly, you will leave feeling more in control and empowered for the new school year!

  • Music Beats and Bots Camp

Description: Participants will learn how to control technology using robots, circuits, and music. Each day, students will compose melodies while creating instruments from ordinary objects. Students will also explore musical apps and programs to develop coding and instrumental skills. Each student will create a musical instrument/inventions to keep for the summer.

  • Percussion Power Camp

Description: Students will explore percussion instruments from around the world while learning bucket drumming, boom whackers, handbells and rhythm band. Participants will perform individually and with a group. Rhythmic notation will be reinforced using various genres of music. Each student will have drum sticks and music journal to keep for the summer.

  • Yarn Crafts and Sewing Camp

Description: Campers will be introduced to Sew Cool machines, crocheting, and needlepoint. Participants will be able to create plushies, purses, quiet books, pencil cases, and various yarn crafts and projects. Each student will have yarn, sewing projects, and crocheting tools to keep for the summer.

  • Boys and Girls Cross Country Camp

Description: This youth running camp will help all participants become faster, smarter runners through their inclusion in activities such as training stations (proper strengthening, form, breathing, etc. will be taught) and exciting time-trial events, games, and activities. Over the four days, campers will learn skills and strategies from experienced coaches and high school cross country volunteers while they engage in fun activities such as relay race, strengthening endeavors like tug-of-war and a battle rope, and running games like capture the flag and an obstacle course. Campers of all speeds and running experience levels are encouraged to participate and will benefit both physically and mentally from the experience.

  • Elite Speed and Agility Camp

Age(s): Ages 10-18 years old
Description: In all sports, there is one thing that is universal and that is proper sprinting mechanics. In the majority of the sports we love, we have to RUN. There aren't too many people with the skill and knowledge to teach proper running technique. During this camp, will provide information on how to be a more efficient runner while also teaching each individual athlete about their gait! Part of the camp will take place in the classroom learning about angles and watching videos on mechanics. The second half will be outside on the track for execution of the drills we studied on that specific day.

  • Girls Field Hockey Camp

Description: Participants will learn the basics of field hockey. This camp is for beginners and intermediate level players. Anyone interested in learning more about the sport is welcome.

  • Play with a Pro: Ultimate Frisbee Camp

Dates: July 1-3 (three-day camp) and July 8-11

Description: Want to learn a fun and exciting new sport? Come learn how to play ultimate frisbee with Coach Cantone, a semi-professional athlete in the AUDL (American Ultimate Disc League) who also teaches French and World Languages at the middle school in his spare time. No experience necessary to sign up. *Each student who signs up will receive his or her very own frisbee.
Cost: $70.00 for three-day camp; $90.00 for four-day camp

  • Girls Volleyball Skills Camp

Description: This camp is offered for beginner and intermediate players. Participants will learn the
fundamentals of lacrosse through station work, drills, stickwork, and small sided games.
Girls Equipment Required: stick, goggles, and mouthguard. Boys Equipment
Required: stick, chest pads, gloves and helmet, and mouthguard.
