Representatives from the Virginia Department of Education visit Pocahontas Elementary School's Innovative STEM Program
Lan W. Neugent, Assistant Superintendent of Technology, Career, and Adult Education, and George Willcox, STEM Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Education, visited the STEM program at Pocahontas Elementary School on April 17, 2012.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is both a state and federal initiative that focuses on critical thinking skills, content literacy, and the investigative process. These are important subjects for all children growing up in today's world. Children learn logical thinking, problem solving, and practical skills through engaging hands on instruction. The students still learn the same standards as other children in the same grades but they are taught in a way that allows the students as many opportunities as possible to create solutions to problems using the Engineering Process. Give Us Your Plastic and we will make it Fantastic!
It's more than just recycling. It's "Upcycling". Upcycling is taking waste products that would often just be thrown away and giving it a second life as something new and different. Recycling is recreating the same thing by reusing the same materials, but the quality of that new product is degraded. On Saturday, May 5th, the students of Powhatan High School will Upcycle a week's worth of collected cardboard and plastic waste to create an amazing Eco-Art installation on the grounds of Central Virginia Back at 2351 Anderson Hwy in Powhatan County.
In an effort to raise the public consciousness of our need for less consumption, and more reuse of materials, the students of Powhatan High School are turning waste into art. Over the course of one week all the cardboard and plastic bottles that were consumed by students and staff at PHS were collected by National Art Honor Society and Art Club students to be used as primary building materials for a community environmental art work. The cardboard boxes came from cafeteria and school supply deliveries. (more)
